Ever get tired of seeing ruffles EVERYWHERE?
You don't?
Yeah, me either..
If you know me you probably know that I love ruffles and headbands.... so why not make both!
{yes... I am very freckley..}
This is so easy and if you are a beginner seamstress this is a great project to start on.
Supplies:
-half a yard of fabric {I used knit. It's great because it doesn't fray. You can purchase this at Joanns}
-matching thread
-scissors
-pins
-sewing machine
-long strip of felt to go on the back
-hot glue
-elastic
This is the knit that I used. Its an indigo color.
I am really into blue right now so I thought that this one was perfect for me.
You could also probably use and old jersey knit shirt?
The first thing I did was cut 2 long strips out of the 1/2 yard.
I don't ever measure... I know... bad!
I would say maybe they were 1.5-2 inches wide maybe?
Make sure that one of the strips is narrower than the other.
Get your sewing machine ready with coordinating thread.
Set your stitch to the LONGEST setting. {Mine is 4}
Then up the tension on the machine. {Mine was 7 I think} This part is very important because it will make it easier to ruffle.
Sew right down the middle and DO NOT back stitch.
Make sure that you have very long threads at the start and finish so you can pull them {see below}
Ok so after you are done sewing down the middle you need to take one of your threads and pull.
NOT TOO HARD though! I have learned this hard way girlfriend... oi!
They usually tell you to pull the bobbin thread, but I pull the one that has more give.
I usually pull from both ends and play around with it.
Repeat these steps with the thinner strip as well and this is what you will have {below}
I know that right now they are a MESS but it will get better.... promise!
Next what you need do do is make sure that your ruffles line up in length and pin them together.
Change your sewing machine BACK to the original settings. This time YOU DO back stitch!
Now just sew down the middle of the 2 pinned together strips.
{back stitching at the end and beginning of course}
Then- I cut a long strip of felt the same length as the ruffle.
Glued elastic to the back of the ruffle, then glued the felt on TOP of the elastic to make it secure.
Finished product!
This pretty, ruffly headband needs a head...
{Oh... you like my crazy, messy bun??? You do???}
Hope you enjoyed!
